Graduate applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and have graduated with at least a 3.00 (鈥淏鈥) grade point average. A candidate who has performed work equivalent to an undergraduate degree or completed 9 semester hours of graduate coursework with a grade point average of 3.25 also meets the minimum requirements for admission. Applicants may also be required to show proof of proficiency in English, which can be done by either attending a qualified institution or submission of an unofficial test score with a Verified Score Report. Biomedical Engineering is a highly interdisciplinary field, and our students have highly diverse backgrounds and skill sets. While students without a strong background in math and science may need to supplement their degree with additional classes, not having a degree in engineering does not disqualify you from our program.

For both MS and PhD candidates, the application deadline for Fall 2026 admission is December 1, 2025. Only MS students are eligible to start in the spring semester, and the deadline for Spring 2026 admission is September 1, 2025. Both Spring and Fall semester applications open in mid-July.

The application fee for domestic applicants is $50, and the fee for international applicants is $80.

PhD applicants who are U.S. citizens/PR with a grade point average at least 3.4 will automatically receive an application fee waiver if their application is submitted by November 15 at 11:59pm MST. More info on fee waivers for U.S citizens/PR can be found here.听

International applicants may reach out to bme@colorado.edu to request consideration for an application fee waiver after your application is complete and submitted in the online portal. Application fee waivers are very competitive, and their availability varies year to year. To maximize your chance of being awarded an application fee waiver, you should submit your application no later than November 15.

Application fee waivers are not offered to MS applicants.

Our program requires 3 letters of recommendation, and at least two of your letters must be submitted no later than 10 days after the application deadline. Be sure to give your recommenders sufficient time to write and submit their letters to prevent your application from being withdrawn.

GRE scores are not required to apply for our program and are not reviewed during the application review process.

We do not accept WES evaluations. The 桃色视频 has internal staff that evaluate transcripts, and external evaluations are not required.

We require proof of English Proficiency from all applicants. Certain applicants may be exempt from submitting exam scores if they meet other conditions as listed on the Graduate School Website, which include citizenship of certain countries or attendance of a qualified institution. If you are required to submit a score, 鈥渦nofficial鈥 test scores are accepted if they are submitted with a Verifiable Score Report.

For students concerned about long wait times or inability to travel to an exam center, our program accepts five different English proficiency tests, some of which are online: , , , , .

We cannot provide details about accepted applicant criteria as each application cycle differs greatly. The decision process for each applicant is performed on a case-by-case basis as well as being weighted compared to the applicant pool.

Our PhD program is fully funded, meaning all admitted students will receive a compensation package that includes the cost of tuition, most student fees, and a cost-of-living stipend. Students who continue to make satisfactory progress toward their degree will continue to receive funding for up to 6 years.听We still encourage PhD candidates to apply for external sources of funding, such as the , the , the , and .

Our MS program is not a funded program. We recommend that domestic MS applicants apply for FAFSA. MS applicants can also apply for other sources of external funding. This website and can be used to search for scholarship opportunities.

MS students have 4 years from the date of enrollment to complete their degree. PhD students are funded for 6 years.

MS students can transfer up to 9 credits towards their degree from prior graduate certificates, non-degree programs, or incomplete graduate degree programs. No credits can be counted towards your MS degree from a prior completed MS or PhD.

PhD students can transfer up to 21 credits from prior graduate certificates, non-degree programs, completed MS degree programs, or incomplete PhD programs. No credits can be counted toward your PhD degree from a prior completed PhD.

Students enrolled in 5 credits from graduate level courses (5000 - 8000 series) are classified as fully enrolled in a Fall or Spring semester. If you are enrolled in only undergraduate courses (1000 鈥 4000 series), 12 credits are required per Fall or Spring semester. A student taking a mix of graduate and undergraduate level courses is required to take a total of 8 credits. If enrolled in a Summer semester, the credit requirements are 3 credits if all graduate courses, 6 credits if all undergraduate courses, and 4 credits if a mix of graduate and undergraduate courses.
