Soon thereafter, European sports scholars also embraced gender as a transformative concept. Initially, scholars focused on women athletes as subjects, but in the 1980s they expanded their perspectives. Rather than considering gender a distinct category, scholars redefined it as a dynamic relational process. The focus shifted from women athletes to a cultural critique of sport using intersectionality and cultural studies perspectives. Scholars purported that gender in sport intersects with other dimensions of human experience and identity, such as age, ethnicity, race and social class. This CU on the Weekend talk with Professor Nicholas Villanueva will examine the intersectionality of gender and sport through these many dimensions, explore existing inequities and share how Critical Sports Studies scholars are working to make sport more inclusive.

ɫƵ Professor Reiland Rabaka, founder and director of the Center for African & African American Studies, will join College of Music Professors Jay Keister, Michael Sebulsky, Jeremy Smith and Keith Waters on March 4 to guide the CU on the Weekend audience through Music of the Long ‘70s: Black Power, Punk, Jambands and Jewish Soul.

Description: If the “Me Decade” of the 1970s is often treated as the decadent extension of a faded 1960s counterculture, the music offered innovations that continue to reverberate. This CU on the Weekend’s four presenters will discuss influential trends in Black Power and Soul music, Punk, Jambands, and Jewish Soul with a view to the “long” 1970s. Professors Jay Keister, Reiland Rabaka, Micheal Sebulsky and Jeremy Smith, guided by moderator Professor Keith Waters, will view the musical and cultural legacy of artists and groups such as Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, the Grateful Dead, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Dave Matthews, the Sex Pistols, and Fanny. There will be ample time for discussion with the audience and between presenters.

Distinguished Professor and Joseph T. Negler Professor of Aerospace Engineering Sciences Penina Axelrad will discuss on April 15 how GPS has had an unprecedented impact on our daily lives and scientific discovery. Tours of the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Building will be available before and after the lecture.

Description: The Global Positioning System (GPS), fully operational since 1995, has redefined what it means to navigate in the world. GPS receivers serve to guide airplanes, Uber drivers, tractors and satellites. GPS timing synchronizes power grids, telecommunications networks and bank transactions. GPS is also essential in scientific measurements of the motion of ice sheets, variations in Earth’s gravity field, and atmospheric conditions used in numerical weather prediction.

How is it that a system, originally intended to support worldwide military operations, has created such broad-reaching benefits? Professor Penina Axelrad’s CU on the Weekend presentation will describe the “HOW.” That is, how GPS works and how its key technical elements came together with serendipitous parallel developments to have an unprecedented impact on our daily lives and scientific discovery. She will also discuss threats to GPS utility and the evolving landscape of global navigation satellite system capabilities. All lectures will be on Saturdays at 1 p.m., and audience members can attend in person or virtually. Visit CU on the Weekend for details and registration.

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 12 Jan 2023 23:52:48 +0000 Arielle Wiedenbeck 430 at /outreach/paces CU on the Weekend Returns September 17 /outreach/paces/2022/08/08/cu-weekend-returns-september-17 CU on the Weekend Returns September 17 Arielle Wiedenbeck Mon, 08/08/2022 - 12:55

Categories:

 CU on the Weekend

Tags:

PACES original content
Gretchen Minekime

CU on the Weekend will welcome people back to campus when the series returns using a hybrid format in September. What happens if the political process is broken? From redistricting to voting rules to microtargeting (the decision by campaigns about whom to contact), it can sometimes feel like those in power are wielding their influence to shape the electorate rather than having voters use their power to shape the government. Has America’s political system been turned on its head? Professor Spencer will discuss recent developments in the law, in the courts and in political campaign strategies that have contributed to growing political inequality. He will also explore several possible reforms for addressing the potential breakdown of America’s democracy.

On October 22, Lori Peek, director of the Natural Hazards Center, will highlight the immediate behavioral responses of children and adults during disasters with What Do You Do When the Earth Shakes? Children, Adults, and Generational Gaps in Protective Action Behavior.

Description: Many schools offer regular drills to train young people and adult staff on the appropriate recommended protective actions to take during an actual hazard event. Yet, little is known about whether this guidance is followed in schools and homes by children and adults. Understanding how people react during a crisis can help government officials and school leaders improve drills and messaging, refine risk communication strategies, and ultimately reduce injury and loss of life.

To begin to fill the gap, a research team led by Professor Lori Peek at the Natural Hazards Center examined the behaviors of children and adults during the 2018 Anchorage, Alaska earthquake and the 2019 Ridgecrest, California earthquake sequence. Their team visited earthquake-affected school districts and conducted in-depth interviews with more than 100 school staff, students, parents, emergency managers and others.

Peek will share what her team found children and adults did in the earthquakes, as well as the factors that shaped whether they took the correct recommended protective actions. She will also explain how the findings from this study can help inform our understanding of risk communication and preparedness for other hazards such as wildfires, floods and tornadoes.

The Community-Engaged Scholarship Showcase will immediately follow Peek’s lecture. Audience members will have the opportunity to talk with ɫƵ faculty, staff and students conducting community-engaged scholarship related to the implications of climate change. The Office for Outreach and Engagement is producing the showcase and Peek’s lecture in partnership with RIO’s Research & Innovation Week (October 17-22).

Both lectures will be on Saturdays at 1 p.m., and audience members can choose to attend in person or virtually.

There will not be a live stream for the showcase.
