Malia grew up on Hawai'i's Big Island and did her undergraduate degree in biology at Willamette University. She obtained her doctorate with Dave Tank at the University of Wyoming, where she worked on phylogenomics of Tricalysia and Castilleja. Malia joined the lab in fall 2025 as part of our new tomatillo defense evolution project. She's working on building the phylogeny in addition to sampling living plants to quantify their defensive metabolites. Outside of the lab, Malia is an avid knitter and biker!
