Each year, June 19 marks the Juneteenth celebration of Black freedom and commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The date also provides an opportunity to deepen understanding and learn.

Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day and Liberation Day, Juneteenth celebrates the day when Union Army General Gordon Granger read aloud the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas––supposedly the last place in the U.S. to hear of its passage.
